BRANDEIS BASEBALL DOWNS SALVE REGINA, 5-2, IN HOME OPENER
WALTHAM, Mass. B Five different players drove in runs in support of junior left-hander Tim Dunphy (Cambridge, Mass.) today as the Brandeis University baseball team defeated visiting Salve Regina University, 5-2, on Stein Diamond.
Brandeis (5-5) evened its record behind seven innings of five-hit pitching by Dunphy. The junior struck out eight and walked just one as he allowed only one earned run to improve to 3-1 on the season. Dunphy giving way to rookie Chris McDonough (Sudbury, Mass.) in the eighth inning. Senior Brian Lambert (Auburn, Maine) retired all four batters he faced to record his third save of the season.
The Judges got on the board in the first inning when senior 1B Jeff Krasner (E. Greenwich, R.I.) walked and scored two batters later on a hard-hit single by junior SS Zach Golden.
Salve Regina (2-7) evened the score with an unearned run in the fourth inning. Senior SS Chris Haddad (Danbury, Conn.) led off and reached second base on a throwing error. With Haddad still on second two batters later, sophomore RF Davin Sirpenski (Voluntown, Conn.) struck a single back up the middle as the Seahawks tie the game.
Brandeis answered in the bottom of the frame on consecutive singles by sophomore catcher Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.), sophomore 3B Jeff Bourdon (No. Adams, Mass.) and senior 2B B.J. Belair (Spencer, Mass.). Winston scored on BelairBs single, while senior CF Chris Navis (Walpole, Mass.) drove in Bourdon on an infield chopper. The Judges added two runs in the sixth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Winston and Bourdon. Golden was the teamBs only multiple hitter, going 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
SRU sophomore LF Joseph Leafe (Manchester, N.H.) drove in a run in the seventh, but the Seahawks could get no closer. Sophomore Matthew Palmisano (Chicago, Ill.) suffered the loss in his first decision of the season. Sirpenski was Salve ReginaBs only multiple hitter, going 2-4 with an RBI.
