WinXP client can't join domain run by NT 4.0 server
Faculty member has a new computer which is eventually going home with him. To move files over from local computers, we wanted to join it to his lab's domain. However, when we try to do that, Windows XP gives us an error about a non-existent DNS entry for the domain controller.

Has anyone else here had any success joining a Windows XP client to a domain controlled by an NT 4.0 server? Is it possible?

Further details for the curious

we upgraded it to XP Professional already.

I had trouble mapping the share directly, but could map shares from Samba servers without problems. I worked around the problem with authenticating against the domain controller by adding myself as a local Administrator at which point I _could_ map the drive.

I think maybe the problem is with NetBIOS over TCP/IP. It had been set to "Default, get NetBIOS over TCP/IP setting from DHCP server" and I've now changed it to "Enable". I don't know if the DHCP server says anything about that. For some reason, it does not seem to be browsing the network, but maybe that's because it's in a workgroup named "ROSBASH" when it should be in the domain "ROSBASH".

A solution (if not THE solution)
I got it to join the domain by the following steps. Not all of them may be required, of course. I'm betting the problem had to do with the simultaneous existence of a workgroup "ROSBASH" and a domain "ROSBASH". anyhow, the recipe that worked:
  • change settings to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" (still can't map BEAKER shares)
  • reboot
  • change settings so that computer is in workgroup "BIOLOGY" (still can't locate BEAKER shares, but can browse Net Neighborhood)
  • change WINS settings to manually specify WINS servers
  • reboot
  • change settings to join domain "ROSBASH" and use Domain Admin username & password (succeeds)
