WINWORD.EXE |
| I only recently noticed that instances of WINWORD.EXE continue to exist in my Windows Task Manager even after I have closed MS Word. Why does this happen? Even after ending the task, I think the instances came back a few minutes later. Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Check your Startup folder for something to the effect "Microsoft Office Quick Startup." This preloads some stuff in the background to make it appear that Office loads less slowly than it does. Also check "scheduled tasks" or somesuch (it moves between windows versions) for "Quick Find," which periodically indexes all files on your machine. Such a process might fork off winword.exe to parse .doc files into text that can be indexed. Finally, it's vaguely possible that you have something nasty that calls itself winword.exe to avoid attracting attention to itself. Run a find for unexpected copies of a file with that name.

Do you use Microsoft Outlook?
If you do then it might be something in your outlook settings.
Outlook will use word to write HTML emails so it often keeps
word running even after you quit.

I don't know why I didn't think of that myself! I opened Outlook once and it was set to edit messages via word. Thanks for the help guys.

Disable "Quick Find" |
Can we dissuade you from writing HTML mails? I think they're a bad habit that should be discouraged. The real reason I wanted to add to this thread is to second Rich's suggestion about disabling the automatic "Quick Find" indexing -- it can really slow down a Windows machine, and most of the stuff that gets indexed is totally irrelevant.

Response to WINWORD.EXE |
| I have it set for "plain text" -- and I took Rich's suggestion and have already disabled "Quick Find".

Sending mail in "Plain Text" by default |
| General comment not specifically intended for Sahil: On many mail programs, you have to adjust at least 2 preference settings to prevent yourself from unintentionally sending HTML mail. For example, in Outlook Express 6 (Win), under "Tools","Options","Send", you need to uncheck the box for "Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent", AND you should also set "Mail Sending Format" to "plain text". See illustration.

WINWORD.EXE |
| I am also experiencing some problems with WINWORD.EXE and would very much appreciate some advice: 1. Often when I close Word, I get this error message: Runtime Error! Programme: c:\program files\microsoft office\office 10\WINWORD.EXE Abnormal program termination 2. If I deselect Word as my email editor in Microsoft Outlook, only text appears in my signature (I also use a logo). I can only get the logo to appear if Word is selected. Any views on these things? Thanks Richard Harris

Could WINWORD.EXE be a virus if I'm not running any applications? |
| I picked up a virus last week which disabled my internet (I have full AVG but it got through anyway). I tried system restore, installation of Safari and Firefox as alternatives but nothing worked. However, a few days later it suddenly started working again but the PC is now running incredbly slowly. I'm working through the list of Processes to see if I can find the virus, and the big memory users are:- WINWORD.EXE iexplore.exe avgwdsvc.exe explorer.exe svchost.exe (LOCAL SERVICE x 2, NETWORK SERVICE x 2, SYSTEM x 3) avgrsx.exe System If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be REALLY grateful! Many thanks Caroline

Hi Caroline: The process name WINWORD.EXE most likely belongs to Microsoft Word but a malicious program could also use the name WINWORD.EXE to mask a virus. In addition there are many ways to infect a computer without ever showing any traces on the systems process list. The best way to have your system evaluated is to stop by the help desk located in the main library. You could open a support ticket with the help desk online but they will most likely need access to your machine to properly evaluate your problems. Contact the Help Desk at the following link: http://lts.brandeis.edu/techhelp/helpdesk/requesthelp.html Thanks, George Moore Information Security security@brandeis.edu
