It took a lot of clicking to get to this forum for reassurance that the problem isn't on my end. Any chance of posting a notice on the homepage of LTS when something as significant as an email failure occurs?

Hello,
Netsys Engineers confirm that webmail is up and running again. We are currently investigating the cause of today’s outage and there may be more downtime as a result of any fixes we implement. Webmail/Email outage update 4/2/08 posted by James Bartes in Technical Support

Work is still ongoing. Your faithful engineers have found a problem with one of the mail servers in addition to the earlier reported Webmail problems. This will explain why some users are having difficulty getting their mail. These issues are not linked just an unfortunate time to have both failures simultaneously.
Thank you for your continued patience.

The problem has been identified and resolved as of 12:35 or so.
The mail server that served mail for folks whose usernames begin with b, d, h, m, o, and y was having problems from round 10:15 or so this morning and caused a problem with webmail and other imap servers.
We were focused on the webmail and imap proxing service, when in fact it was the mail store failure that was the real root cause of today's problems.
We are working to reduce the likelihood of this occurring in the future.
I apologize on behalf of the server that was misbehaving, It is very sorry that it caused the problems this morning.

Those are some random letters there!

April 2, 2008
Brian: There are currently four mail servers, and we wanted each of them to store about the same amount of mail and get the same amount of use. Not every person has the same amount of mail and checks it at the same frequency, though.
So we figured out the percentages for each starting letter, then broke them up so that each server would get as close to 25% as possible. That led to some random-looking letter distributions.
We could have split accounts up some other way than by first starting letter, but doing it this way is convenient. When we want to find a specific person's mail, we just have to go to look at the username to figure out where it's stored.

Elliot, that makes sense, and was pretty much what I guessed was why they were seemingly random letters.
