Club Description:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, was founded and developed by the Gracie family. Its roots are derived from several sources, including pre-war Kodokan Judo and western wrestling. An aim of BJJ is to bring an opponent to the ground and then use grappling techniques (including holds, armlocks, chokes, leglocks, and if allowed, strikes) to cause a submission. It is sometimes described as position first, then submission. This strategy lessens the advantages of weight, size, strength, or superior striking ability.
BJJ is an excellent form of self-defense, and is used in MMA and Vale Tudo (anything goes) competitions, such as Pride and UFC.
TIMES for Fall 2008
Mondays, 7:00pm to 9:00pm: Taught by professional fighter Greg Pomfred from Reality Self-Defense in Bridgewater, MA.
Fridays, 6:00pm to 8:00pm: Taught by professional fighter Greg Pomfred.
NOTE: Club meetings will now be held in the squash courts, not in the mat room above the pool.
No experience is required!
