Grant Salary Contributions and Reduction in Teaching Load Policies

Effective December 2021

These policies were first implemented in 2017-2018. They have been edited and slightly modified for clarity and consistency. They may be terminated or further modified in subsequent years.

I. Academic Year Salary Coverage from Grants

These policies apply to all Tenure, Tenure track, and OTS faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences, regardless of home department.

Grant proposal submissions that fall under the following guidance must include the academic year faculty effort, and corresponding salary and fringe, in the budget and proposal submitted to the funding agencies.

Academic Year Salary from grant coverage is expected at the following rates, based on the following criteria:

II. Reduction in Teaching Load With Grant Support

These policies apply to all Tenure, Tenure track, and OTS faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences, regardless of home department.

General Guidance

Grants which cover full fringe and indirect costs:

Faculty may request course reduction by paying part of their academic year salary from grant(s), provided the grant(s) include full fringe and indirect costs:

Grants which do not cover full fringe and/or indirect costs:

Faculty may request course reduction by paying part of their academic year salary from grant(s) that cover less than full fringe and/or indirect costs:

III. Reduction in Teaching Load with Reduction in Salary and FTE (Full-Time Equivalent)

These policies apply to all Tenure, and Tenure track in the School of Arts and Sciences, regardless of home department. OTS faculty will be considered on a case by case basis.

The deadline for application will be one month before the start of registration for the subsequent semester.

This option is only available under extraordinary circumstances, and a justification of such circumstances must be reviewed and approved by the Chair and Dean of Arts and Sciences
